This full day tour visits the three major cities of the Panionian League. Prienne, where the first grid planned city was built on the slopes of Mycale; Miletus, a trading center with a beautiful Roman theatre and the baths of Faustina, and then Didyma, which is home to the great Temple of Apollo which was home to one of the most popular oracles of antiquity.
Our day begins with a short drive to the site of Prienne where we will explore an early Greek city that followed the Hippodamus’s Plan and built on a grid. Prienne is where Alexander is believed to have spent some time during his campaign and provided funds for the Temple of Athena to be completed. The city also offers a square shaped council chamber, a classical Greek theater built on the slopes of a hill, and a macellum (fish and meat market) that served the Prienians through its history.
We will then drive to the nearby site of Miletus where the Roman theater welcomes us with its spectacular location. The theater hides a number of artifacts, one of those is the Agora. Although the gates to the agora were transferred to the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, there is still lots to see here. We will visit the Baths of Faustina, built in honor of Faustina Minor, the wife of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
After lunch at a local restaurant, we will explore the Temple of Apollo at Didyma. The temple is built on the grounds of an archaic temple and according to Pausanias, the oracle existed here way before the archaic temple and the temple of Apollo, the remains of which are grand and spectacular.
